In Everquest 2 all player races are able to choose racial bonus traits every few levels. For
many races one of the bonuses they may choose is an enhancement to the Chemistry
skill, which for Alchemists is part of what determines how successful they are at making
items. If you’ve already started your character and you’re not a race that can choose such
a bonus, don’t worry too much – it won’t prevent you being a successful Alchemist. If you
have the option to choose this racial bonus, I recommend that you do so, as it does make
crafting high level recipes somewhat easier. The races which may choose this bonus are
Barbarian, Dark Elf, Erudite, Gnome, Iksar, and Ratonga. For each race the attribute has
a different name, but all of them give the player a +5 bonus to their Chemistry skill.

Many of the terms in this section may not mean a lot to you before you begin crafting, but
you can come back and check here for a quick explanation if you come across a new
concept that you don’t understand.
Crafting Buffs
The “spells” that you cast to counter crafting events and boost durability or progress. See
sections 2.4.5-2.4.9 for a detailed explanation.
Durability
Durability is related to the quality level of your item. Durability is a fixed amount that is
divided between the available quality levels of a given recipe – losing too much durability
reduces your quality potential, and losing all your durability results in failure to make an
item.
Handcrafted Items
Items referred to as “Handcrafted” are those which are made from normal resources,
using recipes found in essential recipe books. Also called “normal” items.
Knowledge
The primary skill of the recipe. You do not need to do anything special to raise knowledge
skills as they automatically increase when your crafting level increases. The knowledge
level of a recipe determines the level at which you can scribe it.
Mastercrafted Items
Items with the label “Mastercrafted” are made using rare resources with recipes found in
advanced recipe books. Also called “rare” items.
Pristine Bonus
When you make an item to pristine quality for the first time, you get double the amount of
experience it would normally give. This only happens once per item.
Progress
The progress of an item is how close it is to being finished – an item is completed when it
fills all the blue bars that still have durability in them.
Recipe Books
These contain all the recipes you’ll need to craft with, and there are many different kinds.
Essential recipe books can be found on the vendors in your crafting instances. Advanced
recipe books are chest drops from monsters – to get these you must either kill monsters
similar to the level of the recipe book, or buy them from other players.
Success Chance
The chance of any particular crafting round being successful (a successful crafting round
gives +50 to progress and -10 to durability).
Technique
The technique is the primary skill which determines your success at making items. For
Alchemy, the technique used is Chemistry. Technique levels do not automatically
increase as your tradeskill level increases, and you need to work on raising these skills
yourself. The higher your technique is relative to the level of the recipe you’re making, the
higher your chance of successful crafting rounds and pristine results.
Tick
A tick is the name given to one round of crafting. It is roughly four seconds long.

As you might expect, Everquest 2 Alchemists make Potions and Poisons with a wide
variety of effects. Potion types include heals, power regeneration, damage shields, and
stat bonuses. Poison effects include damage, debuffs, and threat reduction. Alchemists
also make apprentice and adept Combat Art upgrades for the Fighter classes.

Alchemists make a wide range of items, so Alchemy is ideal for almost anyone. Alchemy
is an extremely versatile profession, with a wide range of products – potions, poisons, and
fighter combat art upgrades. If you are a Scout or a Fighter you may find yourself drawn
to Alchemy, as it is useful to be able to make your own poisons or combat arts.
